Middle School

USJ's Middle School, for grades 6-8, eases students through the transition from Lower School to the college preparatory classes in Upper School in a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. The Middle School's curriculum is content driven; by the end of each school year, students are expected to accomplish specific performance goals in each area of the curriculum.

The Middle School offers a core of academic subjects that are enriched with the fine arts, computer technology, foreign language, and physical education. Honors courses are offered in mathematics and English. Seventh and eighth graders take a full period of either Spanish or French.

Middle School teachers use a variety of teaching methods to address the various learning styles of students. These include hands-on activities, lectures, research, technology and many cross-curriculum activities. Technology and character education are integrated throughout the curriculum.

Students' performance is tracked so teachers have a good idea about what students know and what they need to be taught to meet learning objectives.

Middle School Director Don Roe Appointed to Tennessee Historical Commission

USJ Middle School Director, Don Roe, was recently appointed to the Tennessee Historical Commission as a Representative of West Tennessee. The Tennessee Historical Commission is the State Historic Preservation Office for Tennessee and has multiple programs related to state- wide historic preservation and also works to implement the programs of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Mr. Roe was selected due to his extensive background researching and teaching American History for over 20 years. His appointment was effective October 1st, 2017 and will run through September 30th, 2022. In addition to his strong background in American History, Mr. Roe was also selected for his organizational skills, enthusiasm, creativity and strong work ethic. He has acted as an exemplary role model for both faculty and students through his positive attitude and exceptional personal values. Along with those, Mr. Roe’s past experiences in the school system have helped him become a strong leader and effective communicator. “I have had the opportunity to spend much of my life teaching the lessons of the past and how we can apply them to our lives today,” said Mr. Roe. “The mission here, albeit in a politically contentious time, is the same: preserving the history of our state and encouraging the study of it. I am delighted to serve toward that goal because I believe it can positively impact people.” We are honored to have a dedicated, involved citizen such as Don a part of our USJ family.
